Valentine’s day is ’a day to hug cows’, joke posts erupt in government announcement India
インドで牛といえば昔から、国民の大多数を占めるヒンドゥー教徒の間で大地と神を象徴する神聖な存在とされてきました
In India, the cow has long been regarded as a sacred being that symbolizes the earth and gods among Hindus, who make up the majority of the population.
当局は牛を崇拝するあまり、今年の２月１４日はバレンタインデーを改め、牛を抱きしめる「カウ・ハグ・デー」とすることを計画しました
The authorities revered cows so much that they planned to change Valentine’s Day to ”Cow Hug Day” on February 14th this year.
In doing so, it was intended to improve the ”emotional well-being” of the population, and to promote an attitude of respect for local traditions over cultures imported from the West.
しかしこの計画は逆効果だったらしく、その後撤回されました
However, the plan seemed to have the opposite effect and was later withdrawn.
The internet is flooded with images and caricatures making fun of cow hugging, which has become the subject of jokes on TV shows.
