The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan recently announced that as a result of recounting the number of islands in Japan, there were about 7,000 more islands than previously known.
国土地理院によると、電子国土基本図を使って島の数を数えた結果、日本には１万４１２５の島があることが分かりました
According to the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, as a result of counting the number of islands using the Digital Japan Basic Map, it was found that there are 14,125 islands in Japan.
This was more than double the official number of 6,852 islands since 1987, based on a Japan Coast Guard report.
