A painting purchased for 80,000 yen turned out to be a rare work by Van Dyke Bid for 400 million yen

A painting by Anthony Van Dyke that was found abandoned in a farmer’s hut was put up for auction and sold for more than $3 million (approximately 390 million yen).
This work is a study of the painting ”Saint Jerome” by the Flemish master van Dyck.
The completed painting is housed in the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
According to auction house Sotheby’s, the painting of a naked elderly man in a chair is unique for several reasons.
This is one of only two large studies based on Van Dyke’s living models.
According to Sotheby’s, the painting was likely painted between 1615 and 1618, when he was younger when he was working with Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp.
Roberts bought the abandoned painting for $600, according to Sotheby’s.
Shortly thereafter, art historian Susan J. Burns wrote an article identifying it as a ”surprisingly well-preserved” work by Van Dyke.
At the auction on the 26th, it was valued at 310 million dollars (about 400 million yen).
